Best Whey for Building Muscle
Dymatize Iso-100 was our favorite pick. The first ingredient is hydrolyzed whey, which digests faster than regular whey concentrate or isolate. There’s also some whey isolate in there, but this is still the best hydrolyzed whey for the money.
Runner up: Ultimate Nutrition Whey Gold. This one has some waxy maize added, which may digest a little more effectively than some other source of carbohydrates.
Best Mass Gainer
Transparent Labs’ Mass Gainer was our favorite for gaining weight. There are no artificial ingredients, it’s a decent source of fiber, it’s pretty low in sugar, plus it has some MCT fats.
Runner up: Less Naked Mass. With a 1:5 ratio of protein to carbs we found it just a little too carb-y, but it also has no artificial ingredients and is relatively nutritious for something without added nutrition.
Best Whey for Women
Prettyfit Whey Isolate: While men can certainly enjoy this product as well, we liked Prettyfit’s product because it’s practically carb- and fat-free, it’s super low calorie, there are no artificial ingredients or soy, and it has some digestive enzymes added.
Best Whey for Men
MyProtein’s The Whey: More sophisticated than MyProtein’s whey concentrate, The Whey is a blend of three kinds of whey and it has a whopping six digestive enzymes added for improved nutrient uptake.
Best Whey for Weight Loss
FitMiss Delight: What’s really interesting about this low-calorie whey is that it contains a potato extract that is intended to help boost satiety. It also contains a small dose of powdered fruits and vegetables, which may add some antioxidants.
Best All Natural Whey / Best Grass Fed Whey
Onnit’s Grass-Fed Whey Isolate: With no soy, gluten, or artificial ingredients, this is also made with seven digestive enzymes and added probiotic bacteria — this whey has a bigger focus on digestive health than any other we’ve seen.
Runner Up: Naked Nutrition’s Naked Whey. This is nothing but whey concentrate so it doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as Onnit, it’s cheaper and it has quite a bit more fat, so it may have more of the benefits of grass-fed whey than Onnit.
Best Value
MuscleTech’s Whey Tech Pro 24. This is Vitamin Shoppe’s in-house brand and depending on the sized tub you get, it costs between 2.5 and 3.5 cents per gram of protein. It’s also tasty even with water.
